Hurricane Irene to slam into the Carolinas

It appears Irene will take a more typical path into the Carolinas, perhaps as a major hurricane this weekend, rather than plow into Florida as a minimal system late this week.

Given the setup in the atmosphere as well as where hurricanes have traveled from similar starting points, negotiating the Antilles, Irene may take a path similar to Hurricane Bertha in 1996.

Trader Joe’s is one of the economic development wins Kansas City officials are touting, saying it brought a $1 million investment and 60 jobs. The popular grocery chain’s Kansas City store opened earlier this month.

Kansas City has 10 new projects in different stages, which economic development officials hope will spur optimism about the local economy.

Kansas City lands more Johnson County firms

According to a news release posted on Missouri Governor Jay Nixon’s website, Milbank Manufacturing has made a $2.7 million commitment in the area of renewable energy. Milbank will be, “adding new products lines in the renewable arena, including wind, solar, hydro, generators and power management, while hiring 57 new employees for the new product lines as well as sales and management positions. Milbank also plans to purchase new equipment and machinery during its expansion.”

Milbank Manufacturing, which makes electrical products for the utility, contractor and industrial markets, will expand its operations and create 57 jobs. Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon is to be at its Kansas City plant at 4801 Deramus Ave. at 2 p.m. today to announce the expansion, which will include a substantial capital investment.
